Ok, I have a wierd one here..Maybe someone can help.

Senario: I have HTR files saved on a CD. However the data is saved as "Read-Only". How do I know this? When I right click on properties and look at the last category "Attributes"-"Read-Only" is checked. Normally saved HTR files are not Read Only. The problem this creates is that every time I open using HTR DOS or Impact it unzips the files every time and is very time consuming.

Question: Is there a way to change the HTR files from "Read-Only" to "Archive" all at one time vs doing it by individual file so that the files don't have to be unzipped every time? BTW, I have tried to select all and then change the properties but that does not seem to work.

Glen, when you copy files from a CD I believe the default is read only..because they came from a read only device.

If you do select all..then right click on your selection...choose properties..then select archive ...should change all of the properties on the selected files.

of course this you do on your hard drive..not the cd.

Just noticed the bottom of your post. Did you try this while the files are on your hard drive. I tried it and it worked fine. You can't do it on the cd..read only device.

Glen,
Just an FYI-- if I remember properly, only the files that are marked "Archive" are included in backups made to your system, as per Microsoft's backup system. But if you use something else, they usually have you designate the files you want to back up!

Glen,
I ran into this problem trying to backup some directories while I was 'regressing' from WinXP to Win2000.

I found the easiest was to change was to right click on the directory name and click properties. Then turn the read only off.

It gave me fits when I was trying to restore my outlook message file and I kept getting the error message that I didn't have permission to open the file. Took me forever to figure out that what they really meant was that the file was write protected.

Finally figured it out when I tried to open a database and got the error message that said it could only be opened as read only.

And to think that both those programs were members of the same package.:D :D
