...they should be thanking their lucky stars for simulcasting!!!

Handle on the day was $86,684,470, up from $73.5 million last year. Attendance dropped from 112,222 last year to an announced crowd of 77,850. The infield, always packed with college-age revelers who have just gotten out of school, was sparse, owing to a new policy instituted by Pimlico officials this year that banned patrons from bringing beer into the infield. Not only did infield fans have to buy beer from the concession stands, but the admission price was raised, too, to $60.

The record announced Pimlico crowd is 121,263, in 2007. The crowd was announced as 100,000 or more from 2001-2008, when the infield was jammed.

That's only 34372 less people. I would love to see their concession numbers!! Anybody wanna buy a T-shirt....cheap!?

Guess they are also saving all that money from having to clean up the infield afterwards....ohhhh wait, don't they STILL have to do that??

...I know, I know....they don't bet anyway. They don't buy concessions. All they do is tear the place up. Nothing but a bunch of hooligans anyway.......

Word was Donnie; this decision was born from YouTube video of the infield madness. If you search for “The Preakness” the first hit is “The running of the urinals” in the infield. They became embarrassed and changed policy.

I’ll never forget that idiot who jumped the fence and threw the punch at Artax on the under card some years ago. I’m not opposed to madness and lord knows I had my share at their age, but I guess it was turning into a mosh pit.

after watching that video I guess I "can" understand. It's one thing to dash across the tops, but I wonder how many of those beer cans were full....crying shame....wasting all that beer! Guess I woulda just taken the tops off the urinals and replaced it with netting.

LOL Donnie; exactly…what a waste!

I wish I had an answer, but it sure would have been nice to find a happy median where you didn’t send so many away as you said.

Ask TomCat about the great young demographic at Keeneland and we sure don’t need to discourage the youth from getting involved. I guess it’s debatable just how many racing fans came from this bunch; but just having a race track be part of their yearly calendar can’t be all bad.
