We lost Winning Colors yesterday (euthanized). One of the few fillies to ever win the Derby. She was a beautiful filly.

Shortly after I moved to Ky, I had the privilege to see Forty Niner run and win at Keeneland. That was a thrill!!!
So, I bet him in the Derby convinced no one would ever beat him. Wrong! Winning Colors did...broke my heart.
But later I played a P6 at Keeneland, and had the first five and all I needed was a singleton...Winning Colors for the p6. Ha ha I couldn't lose with Ky Derby winner to give me that P6. Wrong!! She got beat that day and 5/6 paid like $25. Broke my heart.
Some years later, we pinhooked a daughter of Forty Niner convinced it would be money maker. Wrong!! Broke my heart
But still Winning Colors will still be missed and I'm not wrong this time. It broke my heart.

Wow, great memories TomCat…what a monster both literally and figuratively she was…

Speaking of Winning Colors and Forty Niner…

• Here’s the controversial Preakness interview / clips with Gary Stevens when Woody Stephens sent Pat Day on a mission after the filly as he later put it.

• Entire Preakness…

• Ironically she is remembered so well for two of her great efforts in losing; this one to the undefeated Personal Ensign in one of the great BC races (and race calls) in history.

• Winning Colors in all her glory winning the Derby with tremendous power.

I just caught a glimpse of the Legend's show on TVG and Bray was interviewing Lukas who said that Colors was the best looking horse he ever saw. She was part of that memorable BC with my favorite horse of all time Personal Ensign and Ensign ran down the Derby winner in the slop at 1 1/8mile. Just 2 great fillies in my opinion.

I don't remember seeing the Preakness when it was ran but I don't know what the hell Stevens is talking about, Colors was on the outside of Forty Niner and he had every chance to rate her without a problem, she just wasn't good enough and I don't think she was going to beat Star that day.
Also, I was at the Belmont when Star won and met Louie Roussell after the race and said congrats Louie and he was very gracious and said thank you very much sir!!, all 21 yr old of me:D

It is really sad that we can't seem to get great racing fillies that can also become great broodmares.

Hollywood Wildcat being an exception.

Wasn't My Flag out of Personal Ensign. Toussaud was another great horse and broodmare.

Just goes to show breed the best to the best and hope for the best is still the adage.
Imagine those people that bred Colors to Cat and ended up with a hoss that never ran!!

I think Ensign had a couple of good ones that McGaughey trained.

Good old friend who worked for years in the b-sheds in Kentucky told me a theory on this Russ. In general; the more “feminine” type make the best broodmares and the more ‘masculine the best racers. Winning Colors of course had shoulders like Dick Butkus! :D
