So if the track is labeled "good" and the temperature is 20 degrees, isn't it more like Frozen?

In that case, is it better to let PL5 use FAST lines or switch the races to WET dirt?

Any opinions?

Jim,

As Charles Carroll wrote in his excellent book ‘Handicapping Speed…”Water opens the door wide open for chaos to slide through”.

Hat’s off to players who can profit from these conditions, but my experience is when wet-profiles and logic prevail the prices are terrible. When the otherwise desirable chaos happens it was not predictive by any method I use.

All things being equal; a plane to the Bahamas a fly back when pitchers and catchers report! :)

Are you pulling a "Lost in Translation" on me Dan?

First race in and it ran very true to FAST form. Used my #1 early horse (#10) in exactas and trifectas, but had too much faith that #9 off the long layoff would be in decent enough shape to run 2nd or 3rd.

Terrible trainer stats should have been my decision maker there on a toss!

Considering there are ZERO other tracks running tonight, I have to keep my eyes on this card.

Although the Bahamas definitely sound like the place to be! :D

Go get ‘em Jim!!! :)

I’ll never talk someone off playing the horses. I couldn’t afford a watch from Cracker Jack’s if I relied on my wet-track profits, so I have a serious bias.

PS: “Lost in Translation”…GREAT FLICK!!!

I watched two races, both figured early, both ran early. Not much of an exacta in the 2nd, but entirely hittable. The #1 horse was a toss for me. Obviously for many others as well.

I am beginning to like Mountaineer again and thought they would cancel for sure tonight. Printed out sheets just before the first race.

Definite early bias so far! Hoping it will continue!

I heartily agree with Dan as 90% of my semi-automatic spots fall apart on all wet surfaces, from wet-fast to heavy, sealed or not.

Frozen is a term best utilized with daiquiri, IMHO.

Well said Mark!!!

I have a hunch several HTR players would kill a track in the rain forest and I have nothing but admiration for them. :)

As Clint Eastwood (Harry Callahan) said in Magnum Force…”A man’s got to know his limitations”.

Well it was a strange night as the first three races worked better using a FAST surface and the rest did better using wet for PL5 to select.

My "uneducated" opinion on this is that the track was sealed and became much looser and cuppier with the activity of the first few races.

There is a definite profit motive here, as speed players continue to base their decisions on final time, no matter what the bias.

With HTR it is a straight forward process to see who will be helped or hurt if the track favors speed or closers.

And as Mark (TV guy at Mountaineer) said, there should be better designations for track conditions. He also said that his experience with Preque Isle Downs showed that there also needs to be different designations for polytrack as well.

Smart guy, I like watching him and his analysis is very good.

Good stuff Jim…

Agreed on both fronts concerning “The Mountainman” and synthetics needing a ‘wet designation.

The lack of “wet” for artificial is pure marketing. There is nothing on this earth that adding liquid doesn’t alter outside of Foster Brooks. :)
