View Full Version : Wild finish at Hollywood

The Hollywood tourney this weekend came to a wild finish. To set the format, it was a real money event with 46 players each putting up a $7500 bankroll and required to bet $400 per race for all of the Hollywood races Friday and Saturday.

Bob Bone, So. Cal owner had the lead after the first day with $46,000. Another individual had a $25,000 bankroll after Friday night. Spots 3-6 ranged from $12,000 down to $10,000 after the first night. I do not have many names because the leaderboard only gave you contestant numbers.

Saturday had eleven races with the first 5 being very chalky. Not good for the Htr players of Mayo, Goodall, and the Wagners. The later races in the card with exception of one (which HTR did not have) were also very chalky.

With 1 race to go, the leaderboard had Bob Bone at $58,000 with the next closest person at $25000. Spots 2-6 were between $25,000 down to 20,000. The last race was a 2 yr old MSW which looked rather chalky. There were some FTS at big prices that did not rate well on the HTR program.

Several players decided to unload whatever bankroll they had left to try and gain the top 6 which is the norm for a tourney of this format. I was not one of them.

Bob Bone made his play early (around 2,000 worth) and left thinking there was no way he could loose. Dennis Tiernan was in the top 5 made and his play of about $1500 in the race. Bryan Wagner who was no where near the top 5 (about 5,000) made his play of about (according to Judy) $2000 as well.

The race was very chalky as everyone expected. Bob Bone struck out and went down to$56,700. Bryan Wagner hits the race large and moves from no where to 6th place and qualifies with just over $18,000. For those of you who did not know, He and his wife Judy, (a former Ntra champ) are now using HTR.

Dennis Tiernan plays a $1000 straight Trifecta and hits for $38000 to win the contest by $600 over Bob Bone. That was good for the $100,000 grand prize plus his bankroll of $57000which was a $150,000 profit for the weekend. Bone lead the contest from the 3rd race on Friday until the last on Saturday and still gets beat.

For those of you who have never played a format such as this, it is far tougher than winning the NTRA, the ORLEANs or any other tourney we play. This format requires you to play real money and you must bet just about every race. Many are races you would not normally bet. It can be very stressfull over two days and money management is a premium. You can grind it out for two days, be on the lead and the world can pass you in the last race and you get nothing. $1000 exactas, trifectas and win bets are the norm, not the exception in this type of contest. It is not for the faint of heart or pocket book. The cream usually rises to the top in these.

Nice job, Dennis

That is fantastic!!!

Congrats to Dennis, that is one serious tournament.

Beating “Bobby da Bone” (I love his name, its right out of a Hollywood racing script) on his home turf is not easy. He follows So Cal as close as anyone and is not a passive owner to say the least. He makes the calls on many claims for Mullins and his other barns. A very sharp guy and beating him you deserve II.

Way to go Dennis!! Good to see you've broken out of your slump. At PRM we chatted a bit and Dennis related how the 2 big tourneys at the beggining of the year really took their toll on his play. FANTASTIC breakout!! Wife's gotta be smiling now!!

(Dennis works hard. His hard work definitely pays off!)

Thanks to Mike for another terrific contest report, particularly as HTR is the only remaining place to get such information. Heartfelt congrats to contest pro Dennis and Brian of team Wagner on their terrific finishes. Both are deserving gentlemen who will be formidable competitors at the championship.

I also agree that there is more tourney news on this board than anywhere else.

Thanks to all of you for the kind words.
Win or lose, I feel truly blessed for the family and friends I have.
It certainly was a wild finish at Hollywood. Starting with race 4 on Saturday, I was trying to cash for $30000 or more. It was just circumstance that it ended up the final race of the contest. I did come close in earlier races. I ran 1st/3rd in the 4th. I ran 1st/3rd/2nd in the 5th for the bigger payoff. I ran 1st/3rd in the 6th. 2nd and 3rd in the 7th. Then 1st/4th in the 8th. I totally missed races 9 and 10. Then finally hit the last. Fortunately I was able to stay in the game by cashing many win bets over the two days (4750 to win on Kendargent in the 8th). Reports have been that I played a cold tri in the last. Actually, I played two tris. 1000 on the 9-1-7. And a 550 on 9-1-5. I had to sweat out the photo for place. Then I had to sweat out the payoff. If it had paid $37.6, I would have missed by $60. Makes up for the bad beat I took at the HPWS in Jan.

Thanks again to all
Dennis

By the way, If any of you are going to be at DEL MAR over Labor Day weekend, my wife is throwing me a birthday party (40). We are getting a suite at the track on Saturday Sept 1. If any of you want to come, let me know in advance and I'll get you a ticket.

Dennis,
Congrats on another fine contest finish, and on the Big Four-OH. I hardly remember what either one was like. ;)
