The Hollywood tourney this weekend came to a wild finish. To set the format, it was a real money event with 46 players each putting up a $7500 bankroll and required to bet $400 per race for all of the Hollywood races Friday and Saturday.
Bob Bone, So. Cal owner had the lead after the first day with $46,000. Another individual had a $25,000 bankroll after Friday night. Spots 3-6 ranged from $12,000 down to $10,000 after the first night. I do not have many names because the leaderboard only gave you contestant numbers.
Saturday had eleven races with the first 5 being very chalky. Not good for the Htr players of Mayo, Goodall, and the Wagners. The later races in the card with exception of one (which HTR did not have) were also very chalky.
With 1 race to go, the leaderboard had Bob Bone at $58,000 with the next closest person at $25000. Spots 2-6 were between $25,000 down to 20,000. The last race was a 2 yr old MSW which looked rather chalky. There were some FTS at big prices that did not rate well on the HTR program.
Several players decided to unload whatever bankroll they had left to try and gain the top 6 which is the norm for a tourney of this format. I was not one of them.
Bob Bone made his play early (around 2,000 worth) and left thinking there was no way he could loose. Dennis Tiernan was in the top 5 made and his play of about $1500 in the race. Bryan Wagner who was no where near the top 5 (about 5,000) made his play of about (according to Judy) $2000 as well.
The race was very chalky as everyone expected. Bob Bone struck out and went down to$56,700. Bryan Wagner hits the race large and moves from no where to 6th place and qualifies with just over $18,000. For those of you who did not know, He and his wife Judy, (a former Ntra champ) are now using HTR.
Dennis Tiernan plays a $1000 straight Trifecta and hits for $38000 to win the contest by $600 over Bob Bone. That was good for the $100,000 grand prize plus his bankroll of $57000which was a $150,000 profit for the weekend. Bone lead the contest from the 3rd race on Friday until the last on Saturday and still gets beat.
For those of you who have never played a format such as this, it is far tougher than winning the NTRA, the ORLEANs or any other tourney we play. This format requires you to play real money and you must bet just about every race. Many are races you would not normally bet. It can be very stressfull over two days and money management is a premium. You can grind it out for two days, be on the lead and the world can pass you in the last race and you get nothing. $1000 exactas, trifectas and win bets are the norm, not the exception in this type of contest. It is not for the faint of heart or pocket book. The cream usually rises to the top in these.
Nice job, Dennis
