Found on the web, does this really work? And will it work at the Gold Coast?
Make Your First Bet at The Hotel!
Not everything at the casino has house edge. Real experience shows that people have a 74.33% success rate of getting a hotel room upgrade by tipping the front desk clerk a $20!

Been there, done that! At the Luxor, tipped the frontdesk person $20 bucks to see if they could find me the best available room in the house. After a very short search I was informed I could have a penthouse suite for the next 4 days for an extra $10 a day!!!
At the Sahara, bought tickets to the show, handed the person seating a $20 bill very discreetly, and asked for the best seats in the house. Front row!!!

ohhhhhh and don't believe the old wive's tale about the slot machines at the airport. They do pay out. Couple years back on our way out, I was playing the slots as we were waiting to board. I hit a $500 jackpot! Almost missed my flight tho because there are not a lot of cashiers working the airport slots!

Don't know about the Gold Coast but like Donnie, I've had some unexpected experiences. I stopped at the Sahara in Las Vegas after christmas a year after Desert Storm and asked half joking if there was a Desert Storm veteran rate. There was: 3 free nights, no strings attached. In South Lake Tahoe, we asked half joking again if they would give us an upgrade. The clerk gave us a better room (I checked on the internet, so I know it was a better room) and said not to worry about it - no extra charge. The occupancy was probably low and they no doubt figured a gesture like that would engender hotel loyalty (it did).
One thing you both were probably not aware of is that tipping your horse racing data provider gets you extra special treatment - we'll make sure the winner is in every file.

Tipping your way to upgrades in Vegas certainly worked better pre 1990. Not saying you can’t upgrade occasionally now, but on weekends you would be very fortunate. Additional rooms are blocked off by the casino managers and are off-limits to the front desk for the most part.
Side-story…
Donnie concerning your airport slot-hit you reminded me of a story. They are allowed the largest hold of any slot machine in Vegas and are prized positions of who owns them.
“Michael Gaughan” (as of when I lived there) owned the majority of the airport slots. (Also original owner of several casinos who later sold to Boyd gaming.)
Coincidence… (Speaks to your “Money talks and BS walks statement Donnie.)
Michael Gaughan’s son Brendan (I think his name was) wasn’t highly recruited in basketball, but somehow he walked on to Georgetown and made the team. He even wound up rooming with Allen Iverson. Some years later as luck would have it, the coach of the Hoya’s John Thompson become part owner in the airport slots in Vegas.
As everyone said previously in this thread…Sometimes it’s who you know.;)
BTW: Be a little wary of suggestions from most cab drivers. They do get kick-backs from certain locations for directing you there.

That reminds me of being at Tampa Bay Downs for the Derby last year. The tables with TVs were all "reserved" and I was informed to check back in 30 minutes to see if the people with reservations weren't coming or not. I had been upstairs already in the crowded seating in the clubhouse and wasn't in the mood to wait. So $5 and the rail "magically" opened up :)

The problem is at the Gold Coast what is there to upgrade to?
It could be similar to Orleans with just standard rooms and a few "high roller" suites.
Most of the hotels have something in between where you can snag the upgrade.
I've stayed at 37 different hotels in Vegas, but Gold Coast hasn't been one of them yet.
