Lone Star is starting their Quarter Horse Meet this week. I don't know jack squat about those things but would like to find out. Few questions:

Can anybody recommend a good book on this subject?
Is Handicapping Speed about Quarter horses?
Donnie, a while back you mentioned that KM had forwarded you some good stuff on this. If so, can I get a copy.

Thanks,
Glen

Glen, our mutuel friend TC has a pick sheet for the Q's at LS. "Pure Gold Edge" is there. And by some odd coincidence the selections are almost exactly the same as the Qhorse system I gave to Donnie! Go figure, but get a hold of our tex-mex friend and tell him I said a free copy must be reserved for you each evening.

BTW: We were supposed to get both Harness and Quarter Horse data files a few years ago. Sadly, Equibase, TrackMaster and the NQHRA made an exclusive deal and the rest of the world was shut out. Richard M, from HDW, who was working at Equibase at the time, told me he voiced his opposition to that deal - but they wouldn't listen. With Los Alamitos (nation's top Quarter Horse track) in my back yard, I have been watching and betting quarter horses for over 25 years and had a powerful program at the ready if HDW had begun to provide that data for us. TrackMaster program was written by a guy that never attended a quarter horse race in his life.

Thanks guys. Handicapping Speed has been on my list forever. Guess I better take the plunge and buy the book.

KM, in suport of Tex Mex, I'll go ahead and drop the a few $$ on his Gold Sheet. Hopefully he will be rousting up some pretty females for his contest thing where ladies must decide to go with top Gold Sheet selection or go against. TC says there is only one requirement to be a contestant in his contest...Something about big squooshies or some such...

Donnie, thanks and I look forward to the email.

Anybody know if Ev1 is as good in 1/4 horses as T Breds?

Glen,

I have a copy of "Handicapping Speed" by Charles Carroll. I'll mail it to you if you still need a copy. He includes some QBasic programming language if you're into that sort of thing.

BTW, I've run into Tommy C. when he's in "selection" mode, and I'm not referring to horses. His choices always have some obvious "talents".

Later,
Cliff

Donnie,

Calibration Handicapping Link below:

Think Carl and Canuck have read or used his stuff. I have only read about 1/2 of it. Think it is a good book for those who are using PP all the time. Perhaps C^2 can comment further on it...

It is mainly a three pronged approach to handicapping-pace analysis, "moves" in last rae, and Beyer Figs/3rd fractions.
Not a bad read and the ideas are pretty sound- I use it as part of my pace analysis only I tend to use HTR velocity and Crammer figs more lately. Can be used with no computers and just a pencil at the track. He used to put out a free newsletter, but now he sells picks.
