Pc Pitstop says I have a serious problem with slow uncached memory access. Said it was from a program or something slowing it down...I've turned everything off and still same problem. anyone familiar with problem?

have you upgraded your RAM recently, and did you get the right speed for your computer....?
Just a thought..

only thing I"ve done lately is add a CD burner. I had it installed before and worked fine. I do have room for more ram...I'm running 256 now..was thinking of adding 128 more...
When I open windows it sit for a long time..acts like it is looking for something..
once it is in it works fine for a while and then locks up. Very frustrating.

OK...so I went in and disabled direct mem access on the CD writter. Tested again and the cache mem problem doesnt' show up. Still takes forever to get into windows and then locks up after a little bit..

a lot of the "stall" getting into windows is the virus program you may be using. Removed it from my laptop and it opens right up to windows...don't surf the web with that 'puter, so I don't need the protection on it!
Don't know if you've seen this...check it out:

There are a few things you can do that should help. These are also good things to do for those not yet having trouble. First, go to http://find.pcworld.com/11204 and download Start Up Control Panel. This lets you easily turn off and on all those things that get loaded into memory on start up. Many of these can be turned off and just run when needed. Play around with it. It's easy to add and drop then. Then go to www.download.com and get RAM Idle (or Memturbo, which is older) This is freeware that locates and reuses bits of memory that are fragmented. While you're at it, get Cachman, which optimizes your disk cache and should also help performance. If you still need fine tuning, you can force windows to unload DLLs that are kept in memory after a program closes and decrease performance. Go to the Start menu, select run, and type in regedit. Click down to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURR ENTVERSION\EXPLORER
Right click Explorer, point to New, and click Key. Name the new key AlwaysUnloadDll. Highlight the new key, double click Default in the right window pane, and enter a value of 1. This will force Windows to unload DLLs from memory after you close a program using them.
Finally, if you're still having problems, you may need to reinstall your operating system. Older versions of Windows require this every so often. Be sure to back up everything important and have copies of all your drivers if they're not on the Windows CD. BOL!

Another reason I love this board!!
