When using the p-scan screen in old HTR it lists the ACL as +3 or - 2.5.
Am I correct in assuming that the + numbers are that much better than par and the - numbers are below par by a certain about?
Thanks,
Doug

Correct Doug. The ACL +/- is the amount of difference from today's Par. You can check the actual ACL values in the Windows version.
Interesting that the simple ACL (average class level) is superior to every other method of pure class appraisal I have tested. That is why I didn't include the DOS CLA rating in HTR2001, it just didn't work as well. I wanted a "pure" rating based entirely on competition and level faced, and not anything that mixes fractional performance or speed ratings. Can't find anything that beats the ACL for basic class appraisal.
In contrast, the HTR Foreign PER ratings are based entirely on international class pars and level estimates. Tests show that these ratings are actually more predictive than regular performance ratings based on pace, speed and all the variant adjustments. But this may be due to the fact that most foreign shippers are high-quality grass runners likely to maintain their form when they race here.

Thanks guys.
Ran into ERNIE at the Reno Hilton today and we figured that is what it meant.

Guys,
What version/screen are ya'll looking at? In my DOS version, screen 7 there is only an ACL number and a rank. No variance from par. The column heading is this:
ACL_r
Sorry for the confusion. Just thinking that the difference off of par would be nice to take a quick look at.
Thanks,
Cliff

Thanks, Ernie,
I think I've got that one floating around here somewhere. Lemme look and see first. I've mostly used the Sept. 5, 2000.
