Someone on PA's board said they had to turn off their laptop at the Stardust. This doesn't bode well for the HTR geeks.

If they don't invite us back, it won't make any diference.

No word from the Stardust yet on our summer seminar. Last year, more than one HTR person was harassed with the laptop in the racebook before I arrived. But they gave us a special exemption for the weekend after we talked with management and no one was bothered after that. But this idiotic policy has been set by the Nevada Gaming Commission and I have heard from people that were barred at various hotels and the explanation is always the same "you might try to call out and communicate with........" . Some racebooks enforce it, others don't seem to care. Others encourage laptops (Orleans, Palms). Very strange - and then there is the machismo of security guards that don't like to be argued with.
No consistent policy just leads to more anger and frustration among customers.

If Vegas won't cooperate maybe Ken would consider a rotating venue.East coast west coast sort of thing. Arlington Park is dazzling in summer, not to mention downtown Chicago..They certainly don't mind laptops and could definitely accommodate a seminar. Just food for thought.

Hey Lou M,
I agree Arlington Park is dazzling in summer. But, where are you finding
a place to plug in a laptop? At the AP tourney last year I inquired about
that when I entered. As it turned out they had to have the electrician
run a wire for those of us with laptops.
As far as I know no one at the NTRA/DRF at Ballys had any hassle about
their laptop. Guess it depends on the establishment like KM said. Lets
find the right establishment. VIVA LAS VEGAS!

Yes,
No problem at all at Bally's, Las Vegas. Matter of fact, my choice of seat had no outlet and the girl encouraged me to unplug the little TV, plug in my strip and hook up the TV and my computer to the strip. Imagine my surprise when the next morning there was a 6 outlet strip neatly positioned and anchored underneath the little cubicle just waiting for my computer to plug into it. I noticed there were lots of those 6 outlet strips positioned around.

Another place in LV is the Paris Casino, they allow laptops and have plugs by each TV by your station, they track your betting on the slot card and it is kept separate from any other gambling you do. A great place to play, usually quiet also.

I just meant they don't mind laptops at any of the tracks or OTBs'. At Trackside I usually plug in at the bar or up in the terrace. What about the MIllionaires Room at the track?

At the track on the second floor by the simulcast area they put individual t.v.s in the last few rows, can you plug in there?

At Arlington there are a couple of outlets on the top floor at the far east end of the building. There are also scattered outlets near some stairwells I use for an emergency supply of power. At Trackside on the non-smoking side there are outlets in the NE and SE corners also the areas with the personal TVs have a few open sockets under the tables.I bring a 3 way adapter and plug in there if there is no open socket. In Vegas I have had no problem with my laptop at the Orleans, but I have found only 1 outlet in the racebook. I usually play at the Imperial Palace.Security used to come by every once in awhile to have a look but now I guess they recognize me and they dont even bother to look anymore.I use an outlet that is at the very top row of the seating area.I heard the MGM welcomes laptops and has many outlets for them, but I have never played there.

I never had any trouble with my laptop at Treasure Island, but I haven't used it there in a couple of years.I like the book a lot, but I stopped playing there.I could not find an outlet and the comps stink. The Venetian book is more of a sportsbook than a racebook. It looks like racing is an afterthought there.

I go to Jerry's Nugget in N. Las Vegas, and while they tolerate my laptop there are no plugins. I've solved the problem with a product called MobyPower. It's at www.1001batteries.com
I really couldn't get along without it.

I received this from DavidN in Las Vegas - he attends our yearly seminar at the Stardust and wanted to relay this about the laptop issue in Vegas =
Ken,
I checked with the gaming control board myself and the rule for laptops
are very clear. It is acceptable to use a laptop in all race & sportsbooks
as long as you are not communicating to the outside world.
In point of fact, the rule is exactly the same for cell phones, and yet they
do not bar people from bringing a cell phone only from using them to connect
to the outside world while inside the race & sports book.
What is curious to all of us in Vegas is that some properties owned by the
same corporation enforce this rule differently. How screwed up is that? This
just is another example of how out to lunch some of these so called race &
sports book directors are.

MobyPower is advertised on their frontpage. Just put in your information in the battery search on the right and it will take you to the right place, tell you all about MobyPower for your computer.
