Hello guys & dolls,
The current issue - March '02 - of WIRED magazine carries a fascinating article about the use of computer technology by some highly-successful bettors. The article by MICHALE KAPLAN is headlined "THE HIGH TECH TRIFECTA" on page 98.
Would like to hear what the techies on this forum think.
Cheers!
Carlton

Wired magazine is kind of a cutting edge, flashy, "you-gotta-have-this", type magazine that covers everything from new technologies to trends to sometimes the way things used to be. Think of it as GQ gone techno. You can see the things they cover at www.wired.com

Donnie's description of WIRED magazine is spot on. It is available at most major bookstores and at news stands in major cities. The magazine's website provides information about current articles but does not carry the articles themselves. That would of course hurt hard copy sales.
Hope you can all find a copy at a nearby location.

Thanks Carlton. I'm heading to the local Quickie Mart after work to get a copy.

I read the WIRED mag article with much interest.
Unfortunately for us - there is no practical implementation for North American racing.
The article focuses on Hong Kong smart bettors that take advantage of overlays with instant betting mechanisms to the tote.
Hong Kong races just twice a week. There is just one track running, so that creates massive anticipation and excitement among the locals. Mutuel handles of $100 million are common!
Most Hong Kong bettors are supersticious and bet wildly. This creates unbelievable overlays that can be taken advantage of by sharpies. And with gigantic handles, there is no tote action to speak of when betting is done late.
Because we have so many tracks and relatively small mutuel handles - huge overlays and the ability to quietly crush the pools is impossible here. One bettor tried it in Dakota OTB. He has been barred, but if eventually all of us can access the tote directly what kind of madness will that create at the last second when thousands of guys are trying to capture the same overlay w/ micro seconds to post time.
Parimutuel wagering is a wonderful mechanism that prevents the strong from devouring the weak for very long. Personally, I look forward to the day when the 'day trader' crowd gets into horse racing. Right now, favorites are being hammered late in the wagering everywhere. With more people joining that bandwagon, we will find our 7/1 shots going off at 20/1 after the bell rings.
The gods of horseracing are unmerciful to those that think this game is easy to beat.
