View Full Version : Question about flagging spot plays?

Lets say you flag certain strong favorites (e.g. K1's) by inserting a new column in Access or Excell (where I am, still with training wheels on:)). You label this horse as 'z' in the new column.

To label all the horses in those 'z' races, you scroll from 'z' to 'z' & copy the'z' to every horse in the race. In a 20k horse spreadsheet this takes about 15-20 min of the most tedious stretch of your life. However now you can query your db without the strong favorite races & every spot play seems to improve as a result. So you continue to do this, though it is extremely tedious & you're getting carpel tunnel to boot.

Is there a program or a way to program or something/somehow where you could label a horse in a spare column & then, miraculously each RACE & all the horses in it would then be labeled as well? Mike Dee tried to explain a way to do this in Access about a yr. ago but i couldn't figure it out. Anyone have any ideas with the new books, etc. out there.

Is there someone to program this into Excell or Access????

Thanks

Ken

Mt Ken, I can think of about 3 different ways to do this access. One of the easiest is with a update query you simply set up a update query so that it selets the runners that meet the filter and then you set the query to update the field with your "z". Once this is set up it will take at least 2 seconds....maybe less to run.

I would think you could do the same thing with a maco, in excell but I haven't done anything with spreadsheet macro's for years. A few months ago there was a fella on this board who was talking about all the things he had done with dbs' in excel, if he still reads this board maybe he will jump in and give you some help.

If you want to give access a try let me know and I'll be glad to help. You can also export queries to excel so if you wanted you could run your data into access add your flag with a update query and export it back to excel with the flag, where are more comfortable.

Thanks Mike,

Maybe I should spend the time & effort to figure out Access. I've just grown comfortable with Excell, though I'm always copying & pasting. Maybe I'll buy the Access book Rick was talking about.

Modell gets a Super Bowl, then Belichek....might have to put a future bet on Schottenheimer & the Chargers:rolleyes:

If you want to stay in excel, I suggest that you buy a book on excel macros and using vba in excel. I think yoiu can do many of the things that we do in access in excell as well.

You'd have a better chance cashing if you bet an 'R' horse in a sprint at MNR?

Actually I'm hoping now that ex-Browns owner Modell & ex-Browns coach Belichek have won it that now it is time for the current Browns to win one. Personally I think Marty S has squandered more talent than anyone in professional sports. Except for Bobby Cox ,maybe, whose 1 World Series title came against the Mike Hargrove led (using the term very loosely) Indians.
