Hopefully this press release as well as other, more detailed stories will be widely disseminated, and not just in what’s left of the racing press: http://www.paulickreport.com/news/breeders-cup/mcgoey-wins-breeders-cup-betting-challenge-collects-270-600-from-a-100-buy-in/.

You have to feel at least a little for the second place finisher, who ended with a total that, if memory serves, would have been enough for an easy win in previous years. I offered him my sympathy after the contest, although our discussion mostly centered on the fact that in one of the machines on Friday my buddy Steve found and turned in an $1800 plus cash voucher which turned out to be his. As you might imagine, he was very grateful.

You know it’s an incredibly tough contest when doing something like that doesn’t produce enough good karma to crack the top ten, although Steve, who also qualified for $100, was not entirely unhappy finishing in 15th.

Since it’s entirely possible that it could be relevant for the last race of the next nhc or next year’s BCBC, I’ll think it's worth mentioning again the calculation I wasn’t smart enough to figure out and explain to dehere until after the fact three years ago.

It basically boils down to the fact that you have to add the prize money to the mutuel payoff to determine the actual odds a player is getting on a horse which has high enough odds to result in a win, which for the winner of this contest comes to about 37-1, or more than double the 15-1 mutuel odds, for his play on Drosselmeyer.

Try as I might, I was unable to attach the complete final standings excluding prize money, which might be a good thing, since for this contest km’s admonition that in many instances the players who end with zero are the ones who were really trying to win seems particularly apt.

As a result of a seating mix-up by the BC, Buckfan and I went from very good seats to the ultimate upgrade, a box on the finish line which had a tv, which I tuned to the dedicated station which showed the contest standings, and at the after party I confirmed what I thought I had seen, namely that one of the zeros was a player, whose name I won’t mention, who lost his entire $45k bankroll on the last three or four races.

Talk about a bad day.

Patrick is a great guy from New Orleans. We were thrilled to see a friend win. This is his first qualify to NHC and he is thrilled about that. He is a hardworking young guy with a family including 3 young children. He has played online tournaments in an effort to qualify in the past. He is just the kind of player we need at NHC. He has been a long time horse player and a FG regular when professional and personal responsibilities allow. We flew home on same flights yesterday with him. Needless to say he was thrilled but very calm!!!! A great guy to win this!!!
