Gabby and Glen have been contacted about their grand prizes: $500 + a free month on HTR - Contragulations! Next contest: two separate categories of player--> Dallas, and non-Dallas!

Dr Larry and TommyC will get consolation prizes of a handicapping or horseracing book from Amazon. I'll email them soon to find out which one they want. I will recommend the SeaBiscuit book for Larry, and "Handicapping for Dummies" for Castillo.

Rick and I appreciate all of you that joined in, win or lose, we hope it was fun and a good learning experience. We'll consider doing it again and have many suggestions to improve it, but mostly Rick got compliments for a job well done.

Hurrikane = are you a qualifier to the NTRA? Please let me know. W. Jackson from NY - do you read this board? On your way to Vegas too I believe? If so, that makes four of you (HTR subscribers) in the NTRA championship - go baby go.

No Ken, not sure where that came from. Now..if someone wants to sponsor me I would be willing to make the sacrafice of spending a week in LV playing in the tourney.

Anything for the cause. :D

Seriously...there are few tourneys around the DC area that I can find. maybe 2 a year. Thinking of traveling to some this year to take a shot at the pot 'o gold. Anyone recommend particular tourneys to attend...or maybe more important...ones not to attend.

Come to Iowa, Kane! I couldn't be in town for the qualifying weekend this year, but the year before there were only 42 of us trying to qualify ($50 entry fee), I came in 6th (they were taking 5) and I missed it by about a buck!! Picks had to be in 2 mins to post, but they picked the races. Good format! Twas Lots O'Fun.

Will treat ya to an excellent corn-fed steak dinner over the barbie in my back yard! Bring the wife and kids! Y'all come back now, hear??

Thats ok 'Kane, you will be there next year. And I hope everyone else gets a little contest fever and attends the qualifiers during the year - Donnie is right, most of them have small numbers of handicappers entered. At the Del Mar surfside tournament, one of the biggest in the country for NTRA qualifying, there was less than 200 contestants and the top 4 got to go to the NTRA (me finished 7th). So the climb to the top is not that difficult - but persistance and planning is what sets Tommy apart. He knows the dates, time and rules for every tournament within 500 miles of him. And of course, he plans far ahead for all the major Vegas contests. If your hobby is also your passion, you get very good at it without any labor pains.

I'll let you guys know, maybe we can get five HTR-ers qualified at once...one word of warning: it is NOT cheap to fly into Des Moines! Fly to Omaha and I'll come and pick you up!! But it's gonna cost ya a couple beers at the track! LOL

BBQ's at my house...ya better like dogs tho....we own two and rent one!

I almost went back to my home town Des Moines for a qualifing contest last year. Wasn't it in June? My Mother still lives there. My normal yearly visit is in August and I nearly always make it out to Prairie Meadows for an afternoon and evening. Not any qualifiers out here in Colorado.

Hope you got a big back yard Donnie, this sounds pretty good, I would like to come. We can have a HTR satelite seminar.

The TDN (Cleveland) event was pretty good, I think there were only 125 entries, there is a big 6Flags, Sea World amusement park nearby and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

yeah, if ya wanna bring the kids, directly next door to the track is Adventureland, a decent size amusement park (for Iowa that is!!). Maybe we should start planning...the backyard is plenty big and we have 2 extra bedrooms that will be available, so the lodging will be free, along with couches for everyone! Not to mention if the kids wanna camp in the backyard I have a 12 man tent.

Seriously, if anyone is interested, Sue and I would be more than happy to host a party! I guarantee you though, after eating at the Nadermann's, you won't look at steak the same way again! LOL If I didn't learn anything else after 23 years in the restaurant biz, I learned how to cook!!

sounds like fun Donnie. An HTR attack on the tourney. And I'll bet there aren't any of those pesky cocktail waitresses lurking around either. :D

One thing though...I"m going to want to do a dog count before we eat! :D :D

Sounds good to me. IA only 13 hour road trip from down here. If Donnie is serving chili dogs, I bet you could lure Castillo there as well.

Kane- YOU are a sick dog! However I will NOT divulge the number of cats we have hanging out. Did I mention stir-fry after the tournament?

However, as Glen points out, maybe that's what it would take to get Tommy to show....?

I am serious about this so anyone within shooting distance, we can do a head count as we get closer....cheap flights in and out of Omaha, which is only 1 1/2 hours away. If we cooridnate it, could be a very inexpensive, fun and possibly profitable weekend!

Hey Donnie that tent sounds great, but me thinks the wife will opt for the local Hampton Inn, that's her idea of camping out:D

Donnie

Glen,
did a quick check of prices into des moines.... for a couple hundred pesos you can make it roundtrip by flight... the savings into Omaha weren't worth the drive!

Mike-
There are 4 motels within 4 blocks of our house....all very well accomodated and reasonably priced...Ankeny is not exactly a tourist destination!! But I am sure your wife will find it very friendly and satisfying....sorry no quarter beds...have to go down to des moines for those hotels!

Excellent Donnie. What airline has the best rates to Des Moines from Dallas?

Donnie
23rd January 2002, 09:46.52 AM
for right now it's American Trans Air...but that may change as the time gets closer. I wish Southwest had a gate at DSM. I use www.travelocity.com if the airport doesn't support Southwest. We normally fly to Vegas for about a buck fifty from KC. Otherwise it normally costs us $225+ out of DSM. It's a nice 3 hour drive south and a 1.5 liter bottle of wine lasts just long enough for the drive! We pack a bottle for the drive and a bottle for the flight....don't think they'll let us carryon a corkscrew anymore tho  (f*cking terrorists!)
